JFE Steel, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Mitsubishi Chemical have started a carbon recycling demonstration project at the Mizushima Complex in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. Launched in September 2026, the project will test whether by-product gas from steelmaking can be used to produce chemical feedstocks.
JFE Steel has begun supplying the gas to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, which is producing methanol at its newly built Carbopath™ demonstration plant in Mizushima. Mitsubishi Chemical is then using the methanol as feedstock to make propylene at its existing demonstration facility with the DTP® process.
The companies will assess the project’s economic viability, identify technical and operational challenges, and consider possible routes to commercialization. They also plan to explore further cooperation with other businesses at the Mizushima Complex.
The three companies announced the demonstration plan in March 2025. The project aims to develop a carbon recycling supply chain linking steelmaking by-products with chemical production.
