US President Barack Obama announced his intention to prohibit the construction of new coal power plants. The reason for this was large volumes of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere formed during the combustion of coal necessary for the production of electricity.
The US Environmental Protection Management (EPA) considers these measures necessary, since coal power plants throw about 40 percent of the total carbon dioxide and other pollutants into the atmosphere. As you know, this situation negatively affects the ecosystem and is the main reason for the “greenhouse effect”. The EPA noted that over the past few years, the number of tornado, hurricanes and other natural disasters has increased many times over the past few years, the emergence of which is associated precisely with the deterioration of the environmental situation in the country.
An alternative to coal stations should be power plants that will work on natural gas. Representatives of the coaling industry have already expressed their concern about this and demanded that Obama not tighten the environmental norms. By order of the President, EPA has already begun to finalize new rules. The allegedly edited version of environmental norms and rules will be submitted for consideration by White House officials next week.
Despite this, representatives of the coaling industry are not optimistic. In their opinion, it is possible that lobbying for the construction of new coal power plants will be canceled, but at the current and new coal power plants, the government will oblige to use expensive treatment technologies, which will lead to an increase in the production of electricity. They refused to comment on the situation in EPA. In this case, the use of gas as fuel will become more profitable. However, in case of refusal of coal, the cost of natural gas, according to experts, may increase. Also, investment activities will probably stop in this sector, which will negatively affect the US coal industry.
Barack Obama is going to ban the construction of power plants operating on coal in the United States
