The Canadian Metallurgist Trade Union demanded that Ottawa reaction to folding US Steel

Канадский профсоюз металлургов потребовал реакции Оттавы на сворачивание деятельности US Steel
Last week, the largest US Steel metallurgical company has announced plans to close a number of metallurgical production in Canada and, in particular, the “gradual” stopmore of the missile plant in Hamilton. The silence of the Canadian government caused a storm of indignation in the trade union of employees of metallurgical enterprises in the country.

"The absence of any reaction of Ottawa to the statements of US Steel brought not only a deep disappointment of Hamilton metallurgists, but also created a terrible precedent for other foreign companies operating in Canada," the joint application of Canada Ken Neumann and the president of the trade union of metallurgical enterprises Leo W. Gerard said.

Canada needs steel. Last year, imports became into this country to 12.2 billion US dollars, the highest level in the history of Canada, with the exception of $ 12.4 billion in 2008 during the peak of raw materials. In 2012, Canada metallurgy set a record of a negative trade balance by purchasing 4.6 billion of dollars of metal products more than exported.

According to trade union bosses, Canada has every chance of successful activities in the production of steel: local metallurgical plants are located close to the places of iron ore and large consumers of steel. However, imports continues to grow, and Canada's metrocamuts begin to stop production.

The fault of everything is considered in trade unions, the country's legislation is too loyal to foreign companies. The anti -dumping legislation of Canada does not provide for compensation in relation to the products made in violation of environmental norms and labor rights of workers.

“We must preserve and improve the steel capacities of Canada, for this there are real economic and environmental advantages of steel production here, and it is not necessary to import it from abroad. A revision of the provision of a special law on imports and the law on investment in Canada will help revive this strategic industry,” emphasizes Canadian trade union leaders.
