According to Russian trade statistics provided in Tokyo, Russia's ferrous scrap exports totaled 248,000 tonnes in January 2014, an increase of 24.2 percent over the same month last year.
However, in line with the global trend, exports declined 46.3 percent from the previous month, marking their lowest level for the first time in 10 months since March 2013.
Of the total number of importers, Turkey accepted the largest amount of scrap metal, over 132,000 tons, or 53.2 percent, up 47.0 percent from the same month a year ago. Spain is the second largest importer with 53,000 tonnes, or 21.2 percent, and South Korea is the third largest importer with 37,000 tonnes, or 14.9 percent, an increase of 19.5 percent.
As a result, the three countries together accounted for 89.3 percent of Russia's total scrap metal exports.
