The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has developed a new grade of steel that will help oil marketing companies' plans to make better LPG cylinders. The new SAIL steel grade has already received ISO quality certification and is ready for use.
Conventional household cylinders are made from 2.9 mm steel sheet. The SAIL chairman said that “The new steel developed for cylinders has a higher strength-to-weight ratio. This will reduce the weight of the cylinders by 2.5 kg. Currently, LPG cylinders weigh 15 kg. Typically 62 cylinder, and with the help of a new class of steel about 70 cylinders. "
In addition to making the cylinder lighter, a new cylinder design was formed that has not been changed for several decades. SAIL has already supplied 50,000 tonnes of this steel for export quality cylinders. Currently, a new steel grade is being approved for the manufacture of domestic cylinders.
SAIL took advantage of the period of low demand in the metals sector by focusing its energy on research and development. The new steel grade is one of 25 new products developed by the company in 2013-2014, aimed at increasing the share of added value in the SAIL portfolio.
Earlier, the Ministry of Petroleum proposed to reduce the weight of domestic cylinders, but due to the difference in cost and efficiency of mechanics, this idea was abandoned. This time, SAIL has presented a solution that will not significantly increase the price.
