ThyssenKrupp presented zinc-magnesium coatings for the automotive industry: ZM EcoProtect and ZM PrimeProtect. They have several advantages over existing pure zinc coatings and can now provide protection for the entire vehicle body. Zinc-magnesium coatings offer superior corrosion protection. In addition, the coating thickness of ZM EcoProtect and ZM PrimeProtect can be reduced by about a third compared to conventional solutions.
These innovative products were developed by the research group ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG, Duisburg and Dortmund. New coatings help preserve the environment and save resources and costs. In total, an average vehicle saves two kilograms of zinc and much more. The improved corrosion protection applies not only to the surface, but also to cut edges, which are even more at risk.
As a result, new zinc /magnesium coatings are ideal for components at high risk of corrosion. Thinner coated sheets also offer improved processing properties. Due to the hard surface, more parts can be produced on the press between cleaning intervals.
As a result, manufacturers will benefit from optimized production processes. In addition, the automotive industry can switch to these new solutions without much difficulty. ZM Ecoprotect coatings offer the same surface treatment as hot-dip galvanized parts. No differences are visible on the car's paintwork, and its durability is also improved. This saves time and money and benefits the environment.
