Timken in Ohio, USA, has successfully commissioned MEERgauge laser-based precision measuring systems sourced from Germany by SMS Meer. The system displays a complete picture of the product slice based on a modern inspection method.
With new measurement technology, Timken is able to reduce tolerance deviations in a fully automated rolling process on SBQ rebar diameters from 25 millimeters to 127 millimeters.
Perry Petrallo, Timken Plant Manager, said that “The results obtained with the MEERgauge system have impressed us. We will then be able to improve our already very good rolling tolerances, in particular by using a single pass system under load.
Up to 500 measurement points over the entire cross section are recorded simultaneously in a coordinate system where the actual cross sections of the shape are displayed. This forms the basis for fine-tuning the estimated tolerances of the finished measurement, if necessary. Cross-sectional fluctuations, temperature or other parameters in the feed are automatically compensated for. "
The company is considered the world leader in industrial technologies used in metallurgy, constantly improving the reliability and efficiency of production. Timken develops, manufactures and markets components and high performance steels. Its products, such as bearings, steel rods and pipes, as well as gearboxes, chains and related products, support a diverse metallurgical market around the world.
