Severstal, the second largest steel producer in Russia, is considering selling its North American facilities. Severstal received offers from two potential buyers, US Steel Corp and Brazilian Companhia Siderurgica Nacional SA.
Severstal's operations in the United States are conducted at two steel mills located in Dearborn, Michigan and Columbus, Mississippi. Sales of the two units in the first quarter were approximately US $ 1 billion.
Severstal Columbus covers 1,400 acres in the Mississippi area, close to major North American auto manufacturers and the expanding US Southern Manufacturing Region.
The plant produces high-quality flat products for the automotive industry, agriculture, household appliances, the construction industry, electrical equipment and energy, furniture, ventilation and air conditioning systems, lighting, equipment and manufacturers of shelving, as well as various pipes, and also has a service center.
Severstal in Dearborn produces high quality flat products for major North American automotive customers. Severstal Dearborn, formerly known as the Rouge Steel Company, is an integral part of the Henry Ford River Rouge automobile complex. The plant has been in business since the early 1920s, first as a division and then as a subsidiary of Ford.
Severstal acquired the Dearborn plant in 2003 from Rouge Industries for US $ 285 million, and has since invested US $ 740 million in refurbishment of the center. Severstal Dearborn has an ownership interest in Double Eagle Steel Coating Company, a joint venture with the American Steel Corporation, based in Dearborn, and Spartan Steel Coating, a joint venture of Worthington Steel, Michigan.
Severstal may sell Dearborn and Columbus steel mills to exit the United States
