During the construction of South Stream in Hungary, its continuation in Austria is taken into account

In Budapest, Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

During the working meeting, the parties discussed the current work on the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline. Currently, the construction of the gas pipeline is underway in Serbia and Bulgaria, where the work is proceeding according to the planned schedule. Laying of the offshore section of the gas pipeline is planned to begin in autumn.

In addition, the possibility of building the South Stream gas pipeline in Austria was discussed in Budapest. In this regard, the course of design and research work was determined, which must be carried out in Hungary in order not to violate the procedure for territorial planning and norms of environmental impact.

An agreement was reached on the joint study of additional conditions related to the laying of a new section of the Hungarian gas pipeline in the Austrian direction. In April 2014, Gazprom and the Austrian oil company OMV signed a Memorandum on the implementation of the South Stream project in Austria.

The new gas pipeline route will run from the coast of Bulgaria, through Serbia and Hungary in the direction of Austria, where the final destination will be the country's largest gas storage facility in Baumgarten. According to the signed Memorandum, storage of a certain volume of gas is envisaged. The design capacity of the pipe is 32 billion cubic meters per year.

The choice of this route for the construction of the gas pipeline will not affect the timing of the main stages of the project, including the fact that the Hungarian section of the pipeline will provide gas to consumers in Europe in the first months of 2017.
