The Italian government plans to find a new leader for the troubled Ilva steel mill. Stakeholders warned that due to the hype, the plant has failed to attract the investors it needs to protect jobs in the economically underdeveloped south. This was reported in rustehprom.ru a supplier of high-quality pipes and rolled metal products in the Russian market.
Ylva's activities were put under special administration in connection with accusations of the owners of the Riva family of uncontrolled plant emissions and waste. But Commissioner Enrico Bondi, who was specially appointed last year to launch the plant and oversee the cleaning program, has not been able to avoid losses of millions of euros, that is, 20 thousand Ilva people in the southern Italian city of Taranto are still at risk of losing their jobs.
Gianni Venturi, the national coordinator of the Italian trade union, said that “There is an urgent need for the government to decide on the choice of a new leader. Italian metallurgy is currently losing between 60 and 80 million euros a month. Economic Development has held meetings with the largest steel company ArcelorMittal and with representatives of the Riva family, as well as other manufacturers, in an attempt to convince them to invest in the plant. "
Both the Riva family and Italian steelmaker Marcegaglia said they are willing to invest in Ilva if information about the true financial situation of the plant is provided. ArcelorMittal declined to comment.
At a meeting of the Democratic Party last week, it was announced that the government wants to take urgent action against Ylwa. This means that Commissioner Bondi will be replaced by a new face.
