Exports of Russian steel scrap jumped 18 percent

The latest Russian trade statistics show that scrap exports in the country increased sharply over the month of April this year. According to these data, in April Russia exported 434 thousand tons of scrap. Moreover, exports during the month were 20.3 percent higher compared to the previous month. In addition, in an annualized comparison, exports during April 2014 increased by 17.9 percent.

Turkey turned out to be the largest export destination for Russian scrap. Russian exports of scrap metal to Turkey reached 227 thousand tons, which is more than 50 percent of total Russian exports. Turkish imports of steel scrap from Russia rose 2.8 percent year on year.

The second largest export destination was South Korea. Russia exported 68 thousand tons of scrap to South Korea during April 2014. Imports across South Korea were up 52.4 percent compared to exports in the same month last year. South Korean scrap imports accounted for 16 percent of total Russian exports.

In third place was Spain, which accounts for almost 15 percent of total Russian exports. Exports to Spain rose 27.3 percent from the same month a year earlier and reached 67,000 tonnes in April this year.
Turkey, Spain and South Korea together imported nearly 80 percent of Russia's total scrap metal exports.
