Exports of scrap metal from the United States rose significantly during April this year, according to the latest government data released. According to these data, the export of scrap of the country during the month amounted to 1.34 million tons. Exports of scrap increased by 36.7 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. The sharp increase was mainly driven by increased exports to Turkey, Taiwan and South Korea.
US scrap exports to Turkey grew almost 6.4-fold during April 2014 compared with exports in the same month a year earlier. Scrap exports to Turkey totaled 323,000 tonnes in April this year, accounting for nearly a quarter of US scrap exports during the month.
A similar jump was seen in the export of scrap metal to Taiwan. US scrap exports to Taiwan for the month increased 17.7 percent over the same month last year, reaching 284,000 tonnes.
Turkey continued to be the United States' top scrap steel export destination for the first four months of 2014. Exports to Turkey from January to April this year amounted to 1.03 million tons. Taiwan came in second with 880,000 tonnes of scrap steel, followed by South Korea with 69,100 tonnes.
