Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA) has received approval from the Guinean Parliament to amend the contract for the construction of a new alumina refinery with a capacity of 2 million tonnes in 2018.
Guinea's legal adviser said the National Assembly unanimously approved the amendments to the EGA project. The amendments pave the way for the implementation of the project, followed by the signing of a $ 5 billion Mubadala Investment Fund for the development of bauxite and the construction of an alumina beneficiation plant in Guinea.
This project was previously owned by a consortium of Dubal, BHP Billiton, Mubadala and Global Alumina and had a construction plan for a production capacity of 2.8 million tonnes. But due to the financial crisis, they postponed this plan. The EGA project is being shaped by the amalgamation of the Emirates and Dubal aluminum businesses. They are owned by an investment corporation
Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC), wholly owned by a subsidiary of EGA, will work on the project. In terms of production this year, EGA may become the fifth largest aluminum firm in the world. The project in Guinea will help EGA provide the necessary raw materials for the UAE aluminum smelter.
Guinea is considered the main supplier of bauxite in the world, which is the main raw material used for the production of aluminum. Alumina is partially refined bauxite. Under the agreement, raw materials for production will be ready for export in 2017 and the plant will begin operations by 2022.
