Scrap metal imports decreased in Italy

According to updated government statistics, imports of scrap in Italy throughout 2013 decreased by 5.6 percent compared to the previous year.

In addition, for the first time in three years, total imports of scrap metal across the country fell below 5 million tons per year. During the year, the import of scrap in the country amounted to 4,950,000 tons. This is the second year in a row that the downward trend in scrap imports to Italy continues.

Germany was the largest exporter of scrap metal to Italy in 2013. Scrap imports from Germany amounted to 1.65 million tonnes during the year, which is exactly one third of the total scrap imports in Italy during 2013. At the same time, imports of scrap metal from Germany decreased by 11.7 percent in 2013 compared to imports in the previous year.

France was the second largest supplier of scrap metal to Italy during the year. Italy imported 677 thousand tons of scrap from France. Scrap imports from France accounted for almost 14 percent of total Italian scrap imports during 2013. Imports from France were down 13.6 percent from the previous year.
