The Department of Commerce and Data Analysis (SIMA), in conjunction with the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), announced that applications for steel imports in June received a permit in the amount of 3,436,000 tons. This is 14% less compared to preliminary May imports, which totaled 4,016,000 tons.
The import permit for finished products in June is 2,764,000 tonnes, down 6 percent from 2,925,000 tonnes in May. The estimated share of finished rolled products in the import market in June was 28% and 27% YTD. At the same time, the permitted import in June against the data in May was increased for plates (by 26%), cold-rolled sheet (by 20%), sheet metal (by 12%) and hot-rolled sheet (by 11%). In the first six months of 2014, with a significant increase compared to the same period in 2013, imports of wire rod (by 103%), cold-rolled sheet (by 66%), galvanized sheet (by 50%), metal-coated sheets (by 49% ), hot-rolled sheets (by 43%), structural pipes and tubes (by 21%), heavy shaped steel (by 25%) and rebar (by 16%).
In June, the largest suppliers of finished rolled products that received import permits were enterprises in South Korea (498,000 tons, down 15% from May), Turkey (246,000 tons, up 66%), China (234,000 tons, down 23 %), Japan (151,000 tons, up 4%), Russia (103,000 tons, down 0.3%). In the first six months of 2014, the largest suppliers were South Korea (2,650,000 tons, up 51% over the same period in 2013), China (1,520,000 tons, up 69%) and Turkey (1,007,000 tons, up 36 %).
