The latest statistics released by the Turkish Statistical Institute point to a sharp drop in the country's imports and exports in the first five months in 2014.
According to the statistical office of Turkey, imports of iron and steel in the first five months of this year in monetary terms amounted to 7.35 billion dollars. This value of imports fell by 3.6 percent compared to the corresponding five months in 2013.
The monetary volume of imports of iron and steel products during January-May 2014 amounted to $ 4240 million, decreasing by 9.5 percent compared to the previous year.
Iron and steel imports rose 10.1 percent year on year to $ 1.6 billion during May. Compared to the previous month, import values in May were 2.48 percent higher.
Based on statistics, the total value of steel exports in the first five months of this year was $ 4,240 million, down 9.5 percent from exports in the same period last year.
Export value jumped during May of this year. Iron and steel became the third largest product in terms of export value. The sharp rise in the value of steel exports helped narrow the country's foreign trade deficit from $ 9.97 billion in May 2013 to $ 7.11 billion in May 2014.
The value of iron and steel exports during the month of May 2014 was $ 897,090,000, up 2.8 percent from the previous month. However, on an annualized basis, the value of exports in May 2014 decreased by 3.5 percent.
