The latest statistics released by the Latin American Steel Association (ALACERO) indicate that imports of finished steel from China rose substantially during the month of May 2014. Imports between January and May this year jumped significantly higher than the previous year.
Imports of finished steel across Latin America from China totaled 858,122 tons in May this year, up 90 percent from imports during May 2013. The region accounted for over 11 percent of China's total finished steel exports for the month.
Imports for five months from January to May 2014 amounted to 3.4 million tons. This is 81 percent more than the total imports of 1.9 million tonnes recorded during the corresponding five-month period last year.
The gap between South Korea, China's largest export destination, and Latin America is narrowing significantly. Sooner or later, Latin America may become the best export destination for Chinese finished steel products, experts say.
Countries that reported the largest increases in finished steel imports from China during the five months of 2014 were Paraguay with 273 percent growth, Mexico with 164 percent growth, Argentina with 157 percent growth, Brazil with 138 percent growth and Colombia. with an increase of 115 percent.
