Mechel Introduces New Coal Beneficiation Technology

Mechel announced the introduction of an innovative technology that will be aimed at dewatering and beneficiation of coal at the Elga seasonal processing plant. The total volume of all investments is equal to $ 2,000,000.

Due to the fact that an innovative press filter from Tecnicas Hidraulicas will be put into operation, it will be possible to carry out high-quality mechanical dewatering of relatively small fractions of coal, as well as filtration of sludge water. Using this technology, a significant increase in the output of marketable products is ensured, by almost 10%, while the enterprise's need for the use of technical water is reduced by 3 times, which is considered an excellent indicator.

To date, it is planned to transfer the processing plant season to a year-round operating mode. Thanks to this approach, the factory will be able to reach a new capacity level of 2.7 million tons of coal. It is also worth noting that when using the enrichment and dehydration technology, it excludes the discharge of wastewater and the closure of the water supply system. Due to this, all environmental safety requirements that are provided by the legislation of the Russian Federation are met.

Oleg Korzhov, who currently holds the post of General Director of Mechel OAO, commented on the implementation of such an innovation as follows: “Thanks to the introduction of coal dewatering and enrichment technology, we will be able to make the Elga year-round plant one of the world leaders in terms of profit and profitability.”
