The Steel Pipe and Cold Forging Association has called on the government to intervene in the pricing of hot rolled steel coils to stop the price rise in the country.
According to the Association, prices for hot rolled products have risen by almost 20 percent since high tariffs were introduced last year. Consequently, prices for steel pipes, in the production of which hot rolled coils are used, also increased by almost 8-9 percent. The association fears that prices for hot rolled coils could rise by at least 10 percent by the end of the year if the interim government does not take strict measures to regulate product prices.
Higher prices for local hot rolled steel coils are driving up prices in the local markets for steel pipes and other products, forcing customers to look for cheaper imported products. The price of imported finished rolled steel in the country is cheaper by $ 20 per tonne compared to the price of local hot rolled steel coils.
The fact that local prices for raw materials are higher than prices for imported finished goods forced one of the producers to relocate its production facilities to Myanmar. If the interim government does not take adequate measures to protect the domestic industry, then many other factories may follow this example, as noted by the Association.
