Constellium, a global manufacturer of aluminum semi-finished products and rolled products, opens a new line in Neuf-Brisach. The new line will produce 100,000 tons of aluminum sheets annually, mainly for the automotive industry. During this decade, the production of aluminum car parts in Europe has more than tripled.
The launch of the new manufacturing facility, created through the joint venture with UACJ Corporation, is another major step in the implementation of the global growth strategy for the automotive segment, according to Jean-Marc Germain, CEO of Constellium.
The facility at Neuf-Brisach in France has existed since 1967 and produces sheet metal for the automotive and packaging industries. The new line will increase production capacity for the automotive industry. The drive to cut carbon emissions is driving carmakers to look for lighter materials, and this increases the proportion of aluminum in car construction. It is estimated that production of aluminum body parts in Europe will increase from 230 thousand tons in 2012 to 700 thousand tons in 2020.
