Australia and France have agreed to build 12 submarines for the Australian Navy by the French arms company DCNS for a total of A $ 56 billion ($ 41 billion).
The Australian authorities chose the military shipyard DCNS as a partner for this project back in April, having rejected competitive proposals for modifications of the Soryu-class ships manufactured by the Japanese company Mitsubishi and Kawasaki, as well as the ships of the German company ThyssenKrupp.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Darian signed an agreement in Adelaide, where he officially opened DCNS Australia. The city will begin construction on the first of the ordered submarines in 2022, employing 2,800 people.
