According to statistics from the Japan Iron and Steel Institute, the country's steel exports totaled 3.35 million tonnes in December 2016, up 3.6% from the previous month, but down 5.6% year on year. The value of steel exports decreased by 4.8% compared to the same period last year.
Japan's steel exports totaled about 40.8 million tonnes in 2016, down 1.1% from 2015, continuing a downward trend for three consecutive years. The export value was about ¥ 2,843 billion, down 22.5% from last year. Steel imports totaled 7.78 million tonnes, up over 1.2% year on year.
