During the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 21 - August 22), major Iranian steel producers exported 2.64 million tonnes of semi-finished and finished steel products, registering an increase of 12% over the corresponding period last year.
The volume of exports during the fifth month of the year (July 23 - August 22) amounted to 512 779 tons, which is 78% more than last year.
During the reporting period, Khouzestan Steel was the largest exporter as it transported 1.163 million tonnes of slabs and billets overseas, up 72% from last year.
According to experts, Iran needs to export at least 15 million tons annually to keep such a massive production volume economically viable.
Exports are expected to reach 8 million tonnes in the current fiscal year ending March 20, 2018.
