State of the rolled metal market in Ukraine based on the results for 11 months of 2017

In the period from January to November 2017, Ukrainian metallurgists produced 16.34 million tons of rolled metal, which is 15% lower than in the same period in 2016. According to ETR-SPECTR LLC, 13.35 million tons of products, or 79.7%, were exported from this volume. Nevertheless, for 11 months of last year, the share of exports was more than 83%. The main export markets for Ukrainian metal products were the EU (32.7% of exports), the Middle East (14.0%) and other European countries, including Turkey (14.4%).

In the volume of exports for 11 months, the share of semi-finished products increased to 42.3% compared to 40% in 10 months of this year. The ratio of flat and long products remained unchanged at 34.1% and 23.6%, respectively. For the corresponding period of 2016, the share in the export of flat products was 29.1%, and long products - 27.0%. The decrease in the share of long products in the total export volume is explained by the loss in March 2017 of one of the main producers of these products in the uncontrolled territory, the Yenakiyevo Metallurgical Plant.

For 11 months of 2017, the consumption of rolled metal in the domestic market of Ukraine amounted to 4.59 million tons, which is 10% higher than the same period in 2016. Of this volume, 26.0% was imported (1.196 million tons). For comparison, over 11 months of last year, the share of imports was 23.1% (0.966 million tons). The structure of imports maintains a tendency towards the predominance of flat products. Imported metal products were 37% supplied from the CIS, 28% from Asia and 24% from the EU.
