According to official data, steel production in India in April 2018 increased by 4.4% to 8.59 million tonnes. In the same month a year ago, the country produced 8.22 million tons, the report said.
SAIL, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), Tata Steel, Essar Steel, JSW Steel and Jindal Steel and Power Ltd together produced 5.01 million tonnes in April. That's a 6.7% increase from the 4.7 million tonnes the six players released in April 2017, the report said.
“The remaining 3.57 million tonnes came from other producers, which is 1.4% more than in April 2017,” the report says.
During April 2018, the production of hot rolled metal amounted to 5.80 tons against 5.38 tons last year. While 4.8 thousand tons were produced by six companies, the remaining 0.96 Mt came from other producers.
Pig iron output increased by 1.9% to 0.80 million tonnes from 0.78 million tonnes in April 2017.
India has overtaken Japan to become the second largest steel producer, according to the World Steel Organization (worldsteel), as its steel production rose 3.43 percent to 8.43 tons in February from 8.29 tons of the latter.
India has set a target for the production of 300 million tons of steel by 2030. In this regard, the Cabinet of Ministers last year approved the National Steel Policy (NSP).
