EU Tariffs for US Goods Come into Force

In late June, the European Commission confirmed that the measures previously announced in response to US steel and aluminum tariffs were to take effect Friday.

The EU will apply an additional duty (up to 25%) on imports of American products, including rolled steel, aluminum and agricultural products.

“We didn't want to do this. However, the unilateral and unjustified decision by the US to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum in the EU means that we have no other choice. The rules of international trade, which we have developed over the years, hand in hand with our American partners, cannot be violated without a reaction from the outside. Our response is measurable, proportionate and fully compliant with WTO rules. Needless to say, if the US removes its tariffs, our measures will also be removed, ”Cecilia Malmström said in a statement.

In addition, the steel sector is awaiting a decision by the EU authorities regarding the possible introduction of new protective measures for the import of steel products from third countries. They will be aimed at protecting the market from possible import growth as a result of new US tariffs.
