Steel production in EU-28 in April fell by 2%

The three largest steel producing countries in the region are Germany, Italy and France.

European crude steel production posted a significant decline in April this year, following the global trend.

According to the World Steel Association (worldsteel), during the month the EU's domestic production was 10.729 million tons. This is 22.9% lower than the 13.909 million tonnes achieved by the region in the same month a year earlier. Aggregate steel output from January to April this year also showed a 12.5% ​​decline over the previous year.

The top three steel-producing countries in the region include Germany, Italy and France. Germany topped the list with a total production of around 3 million tonnes. The country accounted for almost 28% of all regional production. Italian production fell by more than 30% from 1.949 million tonnes in April 2019 to 1.350 million tonnes in April this year. French production was around 800,000 tons, a sharp drop of about 30% over the previous year.

The aforementioned three countries together produced 5.150 million tonnes of crude steel, equivalent to almost 48% of total European production.

Steel production in the EU-28 in the first four months of this year amounted to 49.423 million tons. Until April 2020, only Bulgaria and Finland reported an increase in production over the previous year. Croatia reported no production during this period. Other countries reporting noticeable production declines were Luxembourg and Spain.
