The Brazilian metallurgical company CSN was again fined

The Brazilian Metallurgical Company Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) will be fined 5 million 640 thousand dollars for non-implementation of a number of measures to protect the environment and systematic pollution of the Readonda River, providing 80% of drinking water for Rio de Janeiro.

The steel factory did not comply with 17 of 114 points of order of the Ecological Service of Brazil. The document was signed by the leadership of the plant and representatives of the Government of the South-American Republic in 2009, after a large-scale discharge of unpeeled drains to Volta Redonda.

In addition, CSN has not yet installed an emergency reservoir to prevent hazardous substances into the river. “This is not the first multimillion -dollar penalty issued by CSN in recent years,” said Carlos Mink, secretary of the Ecological Service of Brazil, adding that the company's leadership is unacceptable.
