Trump doubles duties for steel imports in the United States up to 50%

Трамп удваивает пошлины на импорт стали в США до 50%
US President Donald Trump doubles the rate of steel imports from 25% to 50%
Trump announced this news on Friday during a rally at the US Steel factory in Irving in West-Miflin, Pennsylvania. In a post on social networks, he later clarified that a 50%collection enters into force on Wednesday.

Trump was at the Irving Plant factory, which is part of Mon Valley Works, at a rally dedicated to the obvious investment promises of the Japanese company Nippon Steel (see separate article). He says that the new level of tariffs will help guarantee that the preliminary “planned partnership” between Nippon and US Steel will succeed.

In a broader sense, Trump says that he doubled the steel tariff to create a more impenetrable barrier for foreign steel competing with American steel. He explains that a 25% tariff can potentially be overcome by some foreign exporters.

“With an indicator of 50%, they will no longer be able to move through the fence,” the president says.

One domestic steel association immediately welcomed this step. The American Institute of iron and steel published a statement stating that last year, Chinese production became 118 million tons, which unfairly exceeds the total North American volumes.

“Led by China, global excess capacities and production began to grow, even though the fact that the global demand for steel is affected by a sharp decline in the construction sector of China,” comments on the president and chief executive director of AISI, Kevin Dampsi. “Given these difficult international conditions that do not show any signs of improvement, these tariff measures will help to prevent new bursts of imports, which will harm American manufacturers and their workers.”

In March, Trump’s 25 percent tariff for steel imports, one of the earliest trade measures declared at the beginning of his second presidential term (see Kallanish March 13) entered into force.

Trump used section 232 with its justification of national security as a platform for tariffs for steel. Earlier this week, Trump's individual tariffs were canceled by the US International Trade by the US International Trade. These "emergency" measures are still acting in anticipation of the appeal process.
