From August 1, 2025, a tariff exceeding the volume of 2024 at a rate of 50%will be used to import from countries with free trade with Canada (with the exception of the United States and Mexico).
For countries that do not have agreements on free trade with Canada, the government reduced a duty -free quota to 50% of the volume of 2024 with 100% previously operating. Import in excess of quota will collide with a tariff of 50%.
A 25 percent additional import tax from all countries, except the USA, containing steel, melted and spilled in China, will also be applied.
The country's authorities will hold consultations with the industry in order to complete the adjustment of other elements of tariff quota design.
The government will also provide up to $ 1 billion to a strategic innovative fund to support the transition of the steel industry to new areas of business and strengthen internal supply chains.
In addition, the federal government will change its procurement rules. Companies concluding contracts with the government will be required to buy steel from Canadian manufacturers.
