A major fire broke out late on October 26 at Ecoacciai’s scrap recovery facility in the Gello industrial area of Pontedera, in Italy’s province of Pisa. The blaze affected a storage area, and a thick plume of smoke was visible from a considerable distance.
Several firefighting teams responded. Technical inspections are under way to assess possible effects on the environment and public health. The cause of the fire, the extent of the damage and any impact on the facility’s operations have yet to be determined.
Market rumours have suggested that a lithium battery may have started the fire, but this has not been confirmed. Fire risks associated with such batteries were also discussed at the BIR World Recycling Convention & Exhibition, taking place in Malaga from October 25 to 27, 2026. BIR is preparing a training video for industry workers on how to respond to such fires.
