Severstal has begun drying the refractory lining of the indurating machine at its iron ore pellet plant under construction in Cherepovets. Commissioning of the 116 billion rouble ($1.44 billion) project is scheduled for autumn 2026.
Drying removes moisture from the refractory lining before testing and hot trials. Work is also continuing on adjustments to the pelletizers, ball and vertical mills, electrical equipment and supporting infrastructure. Severstal CEO Alexander Shevelev confirmed the commissioning schedule.
Once the complex reaches full capacity, the company plans to gradually shut down its four remaining sintering machines and two coke oven batteries. Severstal estimates that this will cut pollutant emissions by 96,000 tonnes and greenhouse gas emissions by 2 million tonnes.
The new plant will supply raw materials for blast furnaces, improve production efficiency and provide jobs for 365 people.
