Swiss Steel Group has signed an agreement with Canada Nickel Company outlining a potential long-term partnership to supply low-carbon semi-finished steel products from Canada. Starting in 2030, the Swiss company aims to secure exclusive access to about 1 million tonnes of products annually.
The supply would include billets and blooms for further processing at Swiss Steel Group’s specialty steel facilities. The companies plan to combine Canada’s mineral resources and low-carbon energy with the Swiss group’s production capabilities and established European customer network.
Swiss Steel Group CEO Frank Koch said the cooperation would support the company’s efforts to optimize its industrial footprint and provide flexible access to competitive low-carbon semi-finished products. The companies will continue working to establish a commercially and technically viable long-term partnership, he said.
Supplies are expected to come through Canada Nickel’s wholly owned subsidiary, NetZero Metals. It plans to process concentrate from the Crawford Nickel project into finished nickel products and to convert nickel-chromium magnetite concentrate into low-carbon, potentially net-zero-carbon semi-finished stainless and specialty steel products.
