British Steel talks stalled as UK rejects Jingye's multimillion-dollar demands

According to a BBC news report, negotiations between the British government and the Chinese Jingye Group, the owner of the British steel mill, have reached a critical impasse over the Scunthorpe steel mill. The ministers accuse Jingye of demanding "hundreds of millions" of taxpayers' money to transfer ownership, an amount they say far exceeds the company's real value. The impasse has slowed down efforts to attract a new buyer and raised new concerns about thousands of jobs and the country's last blast furnaces.

In April, the UK government took control of the British Steel steel company to prevent the closure of two blast furnaces at its Scunthorpe plant, as previously reported. SteelOrbis. Full nationalization was initially considered, but ministers hoped that Jingye Group would transfer ownership for a nominal fee. British Steel is still officially owned by the Jingye Group, as the government has not reached a full takeover. Full nationalization remains the last resort, and ministers fear discouraging foreign investment.

At the end of MarcBritish Steel has begun the consultation process on closing two blast furnaces at the Scunthorpe plant after Jingye rejected a £500 million support package offered by the UK government.

Next steps in negotiations

  • Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds is expected to join the talks in September.
  • Officials hope to push Jinye to be "more realistic"
