Indian JSL commissions Primetals to modernize sheet-rolling mill

Indian company Jindal Steel Limited (JSL), in partnership with British plant manufacturer Primetals Technologies, has carried out a major automation upgrade at its 5-meter thick-sheet plant in Angula, Odisha. Primetals Technologies will supply new equipment and transfer existing application software to the main rolling area of the plant.

Technical capacity of the 5-meter JSL sheet mill

It has an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons and produces plates with a thickness in the range of 5-350 mm and a width of 900-4800 mm. By retaining key automation features such as the human-machine interface (HMI), operators will be familiar with the system from day one, shortening the build-up period and ensuring a faster return to full production.

Downtime solutions

The current outdated automation system is one of the main reasons for unplanned production shutdowns. With the new system, downtime will be minimized, production will run more smoothly, and the availability of spare parts will be ensured in the long run.
