In the first half of this year, the consumption of steel products in the Japanese construction sector decreased by 5.3 percent to 4.06 million metric tons, while the consumption of steel products in the Japanese automotive sector amounted to 5.43 million metric tons, which is 4.1 percent more than in the same period last year. During this period, Japan's shipbuilding industry consumed 1.38 million metric tons of steel products, which is 4.1% less than in the same period of the previous year.
Domestic steel consumption in Japan decreased by 2.3 percent in the first half of 2025

In June of this year, domestic consumption of steel products in Japan totaled 3.62 million metric tons, up four percent from the previous month and 2.9 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the Japan Ferrous Metallurgy Association (JISF). Meanwhile, in the first half of 2025, the country's domestic steel consumption decreased by 2.3 percent year-on-year to 21.31 million metric tons.
