As previously reported by SteelOrbis The company introduced the Konya Green Hydrogen Project in 2023 with the aim of using electrolysis to produce green hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions and other pollutants from the use of fossil fuels in steel production.
To achieve this goal, Cogne Acciai Speciali has a 1,008 MW anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer capable of producing 165 tons of hydrogen per year. This volume will not completely reduce the plant's emissions, but it will be enough to power one of the 70 furnaces. In addition, it will prevent emissions of up to 26 tons of carbon per ton of hydrogen.
The Konya Green Hydrogen project is supported by €7.9 million in financing from Italy's National Recovery and Sustainability Plan (NRRP), an investment plan that is part of the EU's Next Generation Instrument (NGEU).
