US Steel and Nippon Steel announce new investments in Pennsylvania and Indiana

The Board of Directors of the United States Steel Corporation (US Steel) announced that it has approved new projects worth $ 300 million in Pennsylvania and Indiana, advancing the investment plan of the Japanese steel company Nippon Steel in the amount of $ 11 billion. These initiatives will modernize facilities, increase sustainability, and strengthen US Steel's premium product offerings.

A slag processor in Pennsylvania

At the Edgar Thomson plant in Braddock, US Steel is moving forward with a $100 million slag processing project. After the approval of the permit, engineering planning will be completed, and construction is expected to begin next year. The slag processor will process steelmaking by-products into cement materials, while it will reduce landfill waste, reduce air emissions, and generate additional revenue through the sale of by-products.

Modernization of hot rolling in Indiana

The board also approved a $200 million investment in Gary Works, Indiana, to improve hot rolling to optimize production costs and expand the premium product offering.

Strategic partnership with Nippon Steel

These projects reflect the ongoing strategic partnership with Nippon Steel, which brings expertise, technology, and financial support to US Steel's operations. Nippon Steel engineers are already working with US Steel across North America to improve efficiency and modernize integrated mills.
