The British plant manufacturer Primeetals Technologies in collaboration with Rio Tinto, Mitsubishi and Voestalpine announced the beginning of the construction of the HY4SMELT demonstration plant at the Voestalpine site in Austria. The object with a capacity of three metric tons per hour is planned to be commissioned by the end of 2027.
“Observation of the construction of the unique HY4SMELT demonstration plant in the world confirms our technological and innovative leadership in the production of green steel,” said Herbert Eibensteiner, General Director of Voestalpine AG, and Dr. Alexander Fleishanderl, chief technical director and head of Green Steel in Primeetals Technologies, expressed the relevance of green transformation in the steel sector, emphasizing the importance of a new demonstration plant.
Partnership between the companies was announced in April this year, as Steelorbis previously reported. The new factory will use Primeetals Hyfor and Smelter technologies for the production of hot briceted cast iron, hot metal and cast iron with pure zero carbon emissions.
