In September this year, China's iron ore imports totaled 116.326 million tons, up 11.7 percent year-on-year, up 10.55 percent month-on-month, reaching a single-month record, according to the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). This record volume exceeded the August volume, which was already high at 105.225 million tons. Strong iron ore orders from Chinese mills in August, based on expectations of better steel demand during the traditional peak season, led to very strong iron ore imports in September. Stronger steel production also supported this trend.
China 62% Fe iron ore prices rose further in September, adding $3.6/mt to an average of $104.5/mt CFR.
China iron ore imports in January-September this year amounted to 917.685 million tons, which is 0.1% less than last year.
