Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, a subsidiary of the German metallurgical concern Salzgitter AG, announced the signing of a strategic long-term agreement with the German bulk carrier oldendorff Carriers to decarbonize iron ore shipping.
The collaboration marks an important step in reducing supply chain emissions through Salzgitter's SALCOS® low-carbon steel program.
Starting in January 2026, oldendorf will transport iron ore from multiple ports loading to Hamburg using modern, fuel-efficient bulk carriers optimized for cargo routing and management.
20 percent emissions reduction target
By improving logistics and vessel efficiency, the partnership aims to reduce carbon emissions by at least 20 percent compared to current benchmarks. This optimization will also allow Salzgitter to reduce fuel consumption and transportation costs without additional costs.
In total, this initiative is projected to eliminate approximately 19,000 tons of carbon emissions annually, which is equivalent to removing more than 4,000 passenger cars from circulation in one year.
oldendorff's fleet of eco-bulk carriers features optimized hull designs, advanced engines and fuel-efficient technologies, resulting in lower fuel use and carbon intensity per tonne of cargo carried.
