Global technology company ABB has awarded a landmark contract to Swedish specialty steel manufacturer SSAB to provide complete electrical infrastructure for its upcoming fossil-free steel plant in Luleå, Sweden. This project marks one of the most significant steps in the decarbonization of the steel industry in Europe, consistent with SSAB's goal to eliminate fossil fuels from production and achieve near-zero emissions by 2029.
Cornerstone in SSAB's green transformation
New ABB contract covers the design, supply, installation and commissioning of all major power distribution systems at SSAB's new mini-plant in Luleå. The plant will replace the company's existing steelmaking operations and plans to begin producing steel without the use of fossil fuels by the end of 2029. Once operational, the facility will reduce carbon emissions by 2.8 million tonnes per year, a 90 percent reduction compared to current operations, equivalent to seven percent of Sweden's overall carbon reduction target.
Technical scope and plan electrification
Between 2025 and 2028, ABB will provide a fully integrated energy infrastructure designed to meet the needs of electric arc furnaces, the energy-intensive core of fossil fuel-free steel production.
The project scope includes comprehensive design services for electrical, medium and low-voltage systems voltage and distribution transformers, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and backup systems,
