Russian metallurgical plant Severstal officially commissioned the first stage of a new rolling mill at its Cherepovets subsidiary CherMK, marking an important step forward in the company's long-term modernization program. The investment of 15 billion RUBLES ($185.30 million) represents one of Severstal's most ambitious projects to date.
Designed capacity will be 900,000 tons
The new Mill 170 is designed to produce up to 900,000 tons of rolled steel per year after the completion of the second production line, specializing in the production of high-carbon wire rod. This will allow Severstal to fully meet the needs of Severstal-Metiz, its main downstream processor, providing precise surface quality, optimized metal microstructure and a diversified product range.
Phase two and capacity reallocation
Phase two is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2026. Once fully operational, the new rolling mill will optimize production flows in CherMK's long products and tubulars divisions, taking over some of the production previously processed by the 250 mill.
This strategic reorganization will not only increase throughput, but also increase product specialization and process stability throughout Severstal's integrated production chain.
