Russia is far from the only coal producer in the world that has faced a decline in exports this year. Indonesia, which, like Russia, is one of the three largest coal exporters, is experiencing similar problems.
Physical coal exports from Indonesia decreased by 9.8% in the first half of 2025, to 242.4 million tons (versus 268.7 million tons in January-June 2024). Revenue from coal exports over the same period decreased by 21.8%, from 19.3 billion to 15.1 billion.
The main role was played by the reduction in supplies to China and India - by 20.9 million tons and 5.7 million tons, respectively. Exports to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan decreased by a total of 2.8 million tons.
In addition to the growth in production in China and India, the reduction in demand for coal in the power industry also had an impact: according to Ember, the volume of coal generation in China decreased by 67.3 billion kWh in the first half of 2025, and in India - by 21.6 billion kWh (year to year).
For comparison: the total demand for electricity in China increased over the same period by 197.2 billion kWh, and in India - by 12 billion kWh.
Coal production in Indonesia decreased by 8.1% in the first half of 2025 (by 33 million tons).
