The Philippine government has officially abolished import duties on black plate for tin mill from all countries, in an effort to reduce production costs for local food processing enterprises and ensure sufficient supplies of raw materials for producers relying on steel sheet base.
This measure reduces the import tariff on tinplate (TMBP), a key raw material for the production of tinned steel used in canned food, from three percent to zero within three years. This decision follows the recommendations of the National Economic and Development Administration and the Tariff Commission, which concluded that the reduction would increase competitiveness and accessibility for consumers.
The Office of the President emphasized that maintaining stable and affordable supplies of black plate for the tin mill is essential for food security and industrial recovery. By cutting costs for canned food and packaging producers, the administration is seeking to prevent further price increases for basic goods while helping local industries affected by global steel volatility.
