The US Treasury officially stopped issuing one-cent coins - on November 12, the last penny was minted at the Mint in Philadelphia. The authorities announced that they would sell the last minted copies at auction.
They decided to stop minting due to its unprofitability: in 2024, the production and distribution of one cent cost about 3.7 cents. The pennies themselves will not be taken out of circulation. There are currently about 300 billion pennies in circulation in the United States.
The issue of one-cent coins in the United States began in 1793, with the founding of the Philadelphia Mint. The United States has stopped minting low-denomination coins in the past, in part because of rising copper costs.
