India's Tata Steel limited has unveiled plans to transform its Kalinganagar steel plant in Odisha into the largest facility under its control, with a target capacity of 16 million tonnes per annum, a company official said on Wednesday while marking the plant's 10th anniversary.
Tata Steel has invested an estimated $6.44 billion in the Kalinganagar project since its commissioning, the official said. operation ten years ago. The plant commenced operations with a capacity of 3 million tonnes per annum, which was subsequently expanded to 8 million tonnes per annum currently.
Expansion to surpass Jamshedpur operations
Once the next phase of expansion is completed, the Kalinganagar plant will surpass Tata Steel's flagship plant in Jamshedpur, which currently has a capacity of 11 million tonnes in year, making Kalinganagar the company's largest steel manufacturing hub.
A company spokesperson noted that the Kalinganagar facility has changed the industrial landscape of Odisha by bringing large-scale steel production directly to the state. “Odisha has now become the largest investment destination in India for Tata Steel,” he added.
Tata Steel has historically sourced key steel raw materials, including iron ore and chrome, from Odisha for its plants located in other states.
