The Russian steel company Severstal has announced the completion of a key stage in the modernization of its steelmaking plant, completing the overhaul of converter No. 2 at the CherMK plant. The project, which included a complete replacement of the lining and increased productivity, was designed to ensure stable operation, minimize downtime, and support the company's long-term environmental commitments.
"Capital investments in the planned repair of converter No. 2 amounted to about 80 million rubles (1 million US dollars). Special attention was paid to the condition of the lining, the inner refractory layer that ensures the thermal stability of the unit. The uninterrupted operation and stability of the unit directly depend on its durability. steel production," commented Evgeny Vinogradov, General Director of the Russian Steel and Raw Materials Assets Division at Severstal.
The overhaul is part of Severstal's larger modernization program at CherMK. In 2025, the company completed a modernization cycle worth more than 7.5 billion rubles ($92.98 million), during which all three converters at the plant were replaced.
