The initiative, described by the signatories as unprecedented, highlights the convergence of positions across the circular steel value chain, which has traditionally been characterized by diverse interests. Recycling Europe, the European Association of Metal Recovery and Recycling Companies, one of the long-standing members of which is the Italian Assofermet, is one of the main organizers of the action.
The November 14 letter challenges the idea of introducing a single green steel marking based on sliding scale methodologies, a model originally developed for the route of the coal-fired oxygen blast furnace (BF-BOF). According to the stakeholders of the EAF route, such an approach "will not be able to properly recognize" the already low steel production capacity of the electric arc furnace, which accounts for about 45 percent of European steel production and is heavily electrified and recycled.
Representatives of the sector claim that applying this scheme uniformly on all production routes would be "counterproductive", effectively neutralizing the climate.
