Global steel giant ArcelorMittal continued to push in a new press release for the European Commission to urgently implement the proposed steel tariff quota announced in October 2025, stressing that the measure is essential for the survival of Europe's steel industry and the long-term security of its production base. The new rules are due to come into force in June 2026.
Committed to customers and ramping up production
In its press release, the company also reassured European manufacturers and distributors that:
- It will continue to meet European demand for European-made steel.
- It is preparing to increase production by its European facilities in anticipation of the tariff quota instrument.
- It aims to maintain supply chain stability, support jobs and create economic value in Europe.
Why the instrument is critical now
The company highlighted that EU steel imports remain at record levels, causing serious damage to the domestic industry. The tariff quota represents a vital trading tool to protect Europe's exploration and production capabilities.
